How Many Years Of Experience To List On A Resume
Kent R.
Q: I have 28 years of post-college work experience and just heard something for the first time. My friend, who reviewed my resume, said that I should not show all of my work experience on my resume. Is this true?
A: Most resumes should present 10-15 years of work experience (at most). This is a shock for many people to learn. Not having seen your resume and not knowing the details of your profession and career progression, I can’t say for sure what I’d recommend. Generally speaking, though, I think it is safe to say that 10-15 years of work experience should be more than sufficient.
If you have nuggets from your earlier work experience that you’d like to see captured, don’t worry. There are effective ways to include those details in your resume without having to break the 10-15 year rule.
