Tandem's Tips - Going Back to School

Kent R.

From the archives - common questions worth re-addressing. Q: I was laid off a year ago and have been looking for work ever since. In order to make myself as marketable and as qualified as possible, I’ve started a advanced degree program. Can I put this on my resume, or do I have to wait until the program is completed?

A: There is no firm rule on this. However, it’s commonly believed that – as long as you are actively pursuing the degree (currently taking classes) – you can list it. Be sure to use the word “candidate” along with the month/year you intend to earn the degree.

As always, never misrepresent your qualifications. For instance, never claim that you have a degree when you don’t. It’s just not worth it, and I can tell you that I’ve seen many people pay the price for this kind of falsification.
