HR UNCOVERED - WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE WORLD OF HIRING
Kent R.
I regularly get asked to share more information about what's going on on the "other side of the table" - in the world of HR. From time to time, I write from that perspective. It's something that I want to do more of, so watch for "HR Uncovered" to appear more in this blog. I attended a conference and learned some interesting things that I think are worth sharing:
- In the second quarter of 2009 about 40% of companies cut jobs. In the second quarter of 2010 about 20% of companies cut jobs. This is why things seem a bit better but still feel awful (job cuts are job cuts).
- How is work getting done amidst all of these cuts? Existing employees are working more (about 17% more in the case of hourly employees).
- The category of employees most affected by layoffs = Professionals and Managers.
- The category of employees least affected by layoffs = Senior Executives.
In good news, jobs are consistently being added in many sectors and about 50% of companies are at least "somewhat optimistic" about upcoming job growth (compared with about 35% a year ago).
