I have written a lot about the importance of communicating your impact via engaging Branding Statements – stating right up front what value you represent and what “problem” you solve. If that sounds like marketing a product, it should. When it comes to a job search, you are the product. Many people struggle to view themselves and their work history in the best light possible. Simply identifying accomplishments can be a challenge. So imagine how difficult it is for most to look at themselves like a product. If you can’t “see” the value that your represent, you can’t clearly communicate the positive impact you have made on your past employers, which is the best indicator of the kind of impact you will have on future employers. And that makes writing a Branding Statement, for example, a near herculean task.
This is why a great professional resume writing process must go deeper than mere edits and updates. The resume is a key outcome of the process, but it should not be the only take-away. You should leave with an outstanding new resume, but more importantly, you should come away with tools that help you reshape how you look at yourself and your career.
