TANDEM’S CAREER DEVELOPMENT TIPS: PURSUING A DEGREE FOR A BETTER JOB
Kent R.
Q: I was laid off about a year ago and have been looking for work ever since. In order to make myself as marketable and as qualified as possible, I’ve started a Graduate degree program. Can I put this on my resume, or do I have to wait until the degree is completed? A: As is the case with many resume elements, there is no firm rule on this. However, it’s commonly believed that – as long as you are actively pursuing the degree (currently taking classes) – you can list it. Be sure to use the word “candidate” along with the month/year you intend to earn the degree.
As always, never misrepresent your qualifications. For instance, never claim that you have a degree when you don’t. It’s just not worth it, and I can tell you that I’ve seen many people pay the price for this kind of falsification.
Besides, there’s likely much that you have done. Why not lean into that.
