TANDEM’S TIPS: ARE YOU READY FOR CHANGE?

Kent R.

Q: Last January, I promised myself that I would have a new job at the end of the 2010. I don’t, and I feel stuck. I saw your December 20th post and it really hit home with me. I think my main roadblock has a lot to do with change. What tips can you offer? A: That post sparked the interest of quite a few readers. Many people, when they think about it, realize that resistance to – or discomfort with – change is what’s holding them back more than anything else. Since 2008, “change” has emerged as a significant theme in my interactions with people who feel stuck professionally. Many people are 100% motivated but don’t know how to navigate change.

As promised in that 12/20 post, I am putting the finishing touches on some new services that will address my clients’ need for help facing change in their professional lives. Assuming the website gets updated as planned, the new initiatives should be ready for roll-out the week of January 10th.

As a way to help you start thinking in a change-friendly manner, here’s something I mentioned in a previous post…

If you do nothing else, take steps to fill your days with more and more of what energizes you and less of what depletes you. Start by taking a look at your typical day. How much time is filled with activities that don’t seem like work at all? After you’ve taken some time to examine this, clear patterns will begin to emerge. Many people find it helpful to then jot down notes that speak to 1) what they want to be doing more of and 2) what they want to be doing less of in a typical day/week/month.

At the end of the day, change is about taking positive action. Yep… simply doing something that gets you moving in the right direction. Trouble is, many people need help sorting out their thoughts in order to wrap their minds around exactly what that action looks like.

So, start jotting down those notes and stay tuned for more information next week.
