Listing Volunteer Experience On Your Resume and LinkedIn Profile

Listing volunteer experience on your resume and LinkedIn profile is a great idea, but many people are confused about how to address it.  I get a lot of questions asking whether or not volunteer experience should be listed with “paid” experience – especially when that experience fills in an employment gap. Gaps or no gaps – when it comes to the resume – I suggest adding a "Select Volunteer Experience" section.  In both cases, keep the focus on the most relevant and recent experiences.  Make sure to highlight any volunteer experience that directly relates to your field – this not only shows that you are using your expertise to give back, but also that you have enough passion about your field to do the work in your free time.
