OK.... I know that talking about job loss is not necessarily an exciting topic. However, it’s currently a reality - a big reality - in the world of work, so I want to share a positive piece of news on the topic. I just started working with Ryan, who was recently laid off from his job with a bank. As we set off to do some career development assessments along with work on a new resume, I noticed that he was especially positive. When I let him know that I appreciated his incredible attitude, he told me all about it. He was on top of the world because - when he was let go from the bank - he chose to attempt to negotiate his severance package. He was successful and is grinning from ear to ear because he went for it.
My work in HR confirms that this is not a bad strategy at all. If you see a downsizing coming, do your homework and consider what you might do/say when presented with a severance package.
