Changing Your Job Title

Kent R.

Job titles can be tricky things; sometimes they don’t accurately align with your responsibilities and other times they may sound too lofty for the kind of positions you are pursuing. I understand the urge to change them on your resume. My advice... Don’t change your title, especially not to bolster your resume. That is a bad idea.

There are risks associated with changing your job title. For one, automated background checks could be tripped up when the titles don’t match (and that is not a good thing).

If your title is out-of-line with your actual role, make sure your role and accomplishments are clearly outlined in the bullets. This is what matters most.

Employers know that titles are not clear indicators of what you have done, so they are used to looking beyond them. When they do, make sure that they see quantifiable accomplishments that clearly highlight what you have done and how you have made a positive impact.
