A BIG JOB-HUNTING MISTAKE
Kent R.
I often get asked about the most frustrating things I hear from people looking for work. Well, that's a tough question to address (because every situation is unique), and one where there is a revolving answer. Let me take a shot at answering based on how I feel today.
Recently, I find myself running into many frustrated job seekers who don't have a handle on the reality of the current employment landscape. Most of these people think we're still in, say, 1999 - a time when you could reasonably apply for positions the "old fashioned" way (submitting resumes and doing nothing more) and get a job. To be fair, that approach can still get you a job, but only about 20% of positions are filled that way.
To be a savvy job searcher, your efforts must go deeper than simply submitting resumes. Doing only this is a big mistake.
For the most part... A resume alone won’t get you a job, but a top-notch resume is an important piece of the job search process. At the very least construct an awesome, targeted cover letter for each position and follow up on every resume you submit.
Confused by what a great package of job search documents looks like? Consider Tandem's Toolkit. It's my most popular package, and it's currently on promo (but only until the end of September). It includes:
- Resume
- Cover letter template
- Resume follow up letter template
- Post interview thank you letter template
Tandem's Toolkit helps to energize your job search efforts with an outstanding resume that appeals to a broad range of readers. You’ll also be equipped with three individualized and easily customizable letters. If you’ve been reading this blog you know about the importance of a solid cover letter. You also know that – especially in this economy – following up on your resume is critical. Finally, the post interview thank you letter makes it simple to send off a note to your interviewers.
Take a first step in moving beyond merely submitting resumes!
